Before a recruiter ever sees your name, software has already read your resume, taken it apart, and filed the pieces. Understanding that reader is the cheapest edge in a job search.

An applicant tracking system (ATS) doesn't admire your resume — it dissects it. The parser converts your document into fields: name, contact details, employers, titles, dates, education, skills. Recruiters then search and rank those fields. If the parser mangles a section, that experience effectively doesn't exist, no matter how strong it is.
Standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills), one column, a normal font, contact details in the body of the document. It won't win design awards; it will be read correctly by essentially every system.
Employers search their own vocabulary. If you've genuinely done the work, name it the way the posting names it: same tool names, same certifications, same terms. This is translation, not fabrication — the line is whether you could discuss it comfortably in an interview.
Parsers index your text; humans skim it. Numbers serve both: team sizes, volumes, budgets, percentages. "Processed 300+ orders a week" beats "responsible for order processing" with machines and people alike.
Copy your resume's text and paste it into a plain text editor. If the reading order still makes sense and nothing vanished, a parser will likely manage it too. For a fuller check, run your resume through our free ATS Resume Checker against a real posting — it flags parsing risks and keyword gaps in plain language. And if the structure itself needs rebuilding, the AI Resume Builder starts from a layout parsers handle well.
